Lisbon hands you the obvious things first — the tram, the castle, the pastel de nata. The good stuff is one street further. Eight places we send people who already know the basics.
1. Igreja de São Roque
From the outside it's nothing. Inside: gold, lapis lazuli, an entire Roman chapel shipped over in pieces. The most decadent ten minutes in the city, and it's free.
2. Jardim da Cerca da Graça
Olive trees, lawn, cats, locals reading. The view of the castle from the gate is one of the city's calmest.
3. LX Factory on a Tuesday morning
Skip the weekend mob. Tuesday: empty corridors, the Ler Devagar bookstore to yourself, a long flat white on the rooftop.
4. Praia do Meco
Forty-five minutes south, across the river. Wide, wild, almost no buildings. A whole different country.
5. Tasca Zé dos Cornos
A tiled tasca behind Mouraria. €12 for the best grilled pork ribs in Lisbon. No menu in English — that's the point.
6. Estrela Basilica rooftop
Climb to the top of the basilica. €4. Almost no one knows you can. The view is more intimate than the castle.
7. Damas (Graça)
Restaurant by day, concert venue by night. Independent, beloved, properly Lisbon.
8. The walk down from Castelo to Sé at night
Just walk. Yellow lamps, no one around, your footsteps echoing on the cobblestones. Ten free minutes you'll remember for years.
