Chiado is the heart. You walk to Bairro Alto, downtown, the river, the best restaurants and the metro. Hotels we like: Bairro Alto Hotel (boutique, rooftop), Verride Palácio Santa Catarina (jaw-dropping views), Browns Central (mid-range, perfect location).
Príncipe Real for elegance — leafy squares, concept stores, our favourite cocktail bars. Memmo Príncipe Real and The Lumiares are our picks. Alfama for cinematic — fado from open windows, river views from your bed. Memmo Alfama is the move.
Skip the airport hotels unless you're transiting one night. Skip Parque das Nações for a short trip — modern but soulless and far. And while Bairro Alto is fun, sleeping there on a Friday is a mistake unless you're 22 and out till 4am.
