The Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in Lisbon

Lisbon's neighbourhoods each have their own personality. Here's how to choose where to stay based on what matters most to you.

Chiado & Baixa · first-timers

Stay here if you want everything within reach: the river, restaurants, shops, theatres, Rossio station for Sintra, and short rides to almost every tour pickup point. It is polished, practical, and busy — the right choice when convenience matters more than silence.

Avenida da Liberdade · hotels & elegance

For five-star hotels, wide pavements, designer boutiques, and easy taxi access, Avenida is hard to beat. You are close to Solar dos Presuntos, Príncipe Real, and the city centre without sleeping directly inside the most crowded streets.

Príncipe Real · design, gardens & dining

Lisbon editorial detail

Príncipe Real is the Lisbon we recommend for couples and repeat visitors: leafy squares, independent shops, cocktail bars, small hotels, and excellent restaurants. It is central but calmer, with Bairro Alto close enough for one drink and far enough to avoid the noise.

Alfama & Graça · atmosphere over convenience

Choose Alfama or Graça for tiled lanes, viewpoints, fado, morning light, and old Lisbon atmosphere. Pack light: stairs are part of the experience. For private tuk tuk tours, this is a wonderful starting point because the best viewpoints are already on your doorstep.

Belém · monuments and riverside calm

Belém works beautifully for families and travellers who prefer space. Mornings are magical before the buses arrive, the riverside is flat for walking, and Cascais or Sintra day trips start smoothly from here. The trade-off: nightlife and central restaurants require a ride.

Our rule: first visit, stay central. Second visit, choose the neighbourhood that matches your evenings.
