24 Hours in Sintra: Palaces, Forests & the Atlantic

Sintra is a fairytale that gets ruined by buses. The trick is simple: arrive early, leave the train station alone, skip Pena's main entrance line, and end the day at the ocean. Here's how.

08:00 · Quinta da Regaleira (before the gates open)

Be at the gates of Quinta da Regaleira at 09:30 sharp. You'll have the Initiation Well almost to yourself. Walk down the spiral, through the underground tunnels, out by the lake. Forty-five minutes is enough.

10:30 · Pena Palace, the smart way

Buy timed-entry tickets online before you go. Skip the bus from the village — go straight to the upper gate. The colours are unreal, the views are everything, and an hour inside is plenty.

13:00 · Long lunch in the village

Tascantiga for petiscos and atmosphere, or Incomum by Luís Santos for something more refined. Travesseiros and queijadas at Piriquita afterwards — non-negotiable.

15:30 · Cabo da Roca

Drive 25 minutes to the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Wind, cliffs, the Atlantic going forever. Stand for ten minutes and you'll feel why Portuguese explorers needed to leave.

17:00 · Praia da Ursa or Azenhas do Mar

Praia da Ursa for the dramatic, half-empty beach (a 25-minute walk down). Azenhas do Mar for white houses cascading into the ocean and a glass of wine on the cliff.

19:30 · Sunset dinner in Cascais on the way back

Don't drive straight back to Lisbon. Stop in Cascais for fish at Mar do Inferno or Furnas do Guincho. The bay turns gold, the road back to Lisbon along the Marginal is one of the best night drives in Portugal.
